Come charlize, come angelina.

Quello che prima ti sembrava impossibile diventerà semplice, normale. Non ci credi? Io sono sicuro. E presto. (…) Guarda, Natalia, il cielo! È una meraviglia!

Someone asked ThisFits a question about collars, and I thought I might weigh in with how and what I have learned about the collar types that work best for me.
These are two links to guides I found for collar selection guides. There are likely better ones that are more comprehensive, but these do the job well enough. Pay attention to which collars work for your face shape and what you can gain/lose through collar selection. Although you might love a certain shirt on a hanger, if it doesn’t make YOU look good, then you are missing an opportunity.
The OCBD is specifically thrown around frequently as a must have for guys. Oxford cloth is my favorite casual shirting, and if that collar works for you, then definitely get yours. However, if you are a slender faced guy, a spread collar will be much better for you, so look for other oxford cloth shirts with spread or cutaway collars. Stick with what looks best on you, regardless of what others deem as their essentials.
The button down collar (offered in many different fabrics other than oxford) is seen as a less formal collar than non-buttoning options because it originated with polo players wanting to keep their collars from flapping in the wind. You will sometimes see men wear button down collars with suits, but they are not intended to be so formal. They go better with blazers or odd jackets and knit or repp striped ties (all of which have sporting lineage).
Try on several types of collars to find what suits you best, then work within that set of collars and use different fabrics, colors, and other design elements to define the formality of the shirt. Some of the other design elements like cuffs and plackets do as much as a collar to set the formality of a shirt, but have less to do with the wearer’s body characteristics.
